Who Was Kate Sessions?
Kate Sessions was not just a horticulturist—she was a visionary who revolutionized San Diego’s landscape. Born in 1857, she studied botany and became one of the most influential figures in California’s gardening history.

In 1892, Sessions struck a deal with the city: in exchange for land in Balboa Park, she would plant 100 trees annually in the park and another 300 trees throughout San Diego. This commitment transformed the once-dry and desolate land into a green paradise.
Her love for exotic plants introduced a diverse collection that still thrives today, including jacarandas, eucalyptus, and a vast array of flowering species. Thanks to her, Balboa Park stands as a testament to sustainable urban beauty.
