Balboa Park Gardens – A Legacy of Kate Sessions
In 1892, Kate Sessions, a botanist and horticulturalist, played a pivotal role in establishing and developing City Park, now know as Balboa Park, San Diego. She established a nursery and agreed to plant 100 trees a year for 10 years. Today, Balboa Park is more than just a park—it’s a living museum of botanical beauty.
Kate Sessions transformed San Diego’s barren landscapes into thriving green spaces, introducing thousands of trees and plants to the city. Her contributions remain an integral part of Balboa Park, shaping it into the lush oasis we know today.
With over a dozen unique gardens, each telling a different story, this site is dedicated to exploring their charm and highlighting the profound impact of Kate Sessions, the “Mother of Balboa Park.” Today, Balboa Park gardens filled with towering palms, vibrant roses, and peaceful alcoves that offer a retreat into nature’s finest artistry. Whether you’re a plant enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a serene escape, you’ll find a garden that speaks to you.

Honoring Kate Sessions with a Statue
Located near the Park’s west entrance on Laurel Avenue, Sefton Plaza features several bronze statues that provide a look into Balboa Park’s history. A bronze statue of horticulturist Kate Sessions, often referred to as the “Mother of Balboa Park” is located on the southwest corner of the Plaza.
The six and one-half foot statue depicts Kate as she is most fondly remembered-in a hat and long flowing skirt, a trowel in one hand and a seedling in the other. The surrounding garden is filled with many of the plants she is credited with bringing to Balboa Park, including:
- Matilija Poppy
- Indian Hawthorne
- Lily of the Nile
- Hong Kong Orchid trees
The statue depicts her dedication to planting and nurturing San Diego’s green spaces.
